History and People - Amália Rodrigues


Amália da Piedade Rodrigues was born in a poor family.
She became internationally famous by singing the FADO.
Fado is a typical portuguese sad melody, composed in honour
of our fishermen, when leaving to sea.
Some of the most popular sounds are: "Gaivota", "Barco Negro",
"Povo que Lavas no Rio" and "Dar de Beber à Dor".

Born in 23rd July of 1920.
Died in 6th October of 1999.

History and People - José Saramago


José Saramago was born on 16th November of 1922 in village Azinhaga (Ribatejo) and at the moment he lives in Lanzarote.

He was the Director of a jornal “ Diário de Noticias”.
At present he is a famous writer. His books are about events of our History and some social features of our people. He also writes novels where he explores the main philosofical themes of the human beings. He won the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1998.

Social Features - Introduction

The Portuguese usually go to the cafe every morning and have breakfast. At the weekends they go to the bars or discos.
Some Portuguese know each other in chats and on some teletext pages. Those who live in cities prefer the shopping centres, while the others that live in the villages go to the street fairs and to the parties organized by friends. The weekends are used to rest, to go for a walk on the beach, to go to the cinema or theater, to practice sport, to walk in the parks…
